The 2015 International Association of Women Police conference took place 23rd – 27th August at the Cardiff Motorpoint Arena. The IAWP was founded in 1915 as an international organisation for women in criminal justice professions. Today, the association has members in 60 countries and counting. The Annual Training Conference is the biggest event in the association’s calendar, and this year’s event in Wales was particularly special, marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of the IAWP.
As well as recognising the huge contribution that women make towards policing, the conference was a fantastic opportunity to hear from global police leaders; sharing best practise and discussing cross-cutting, local and international issues.
An exhibition ran alongside the conference and I was pleased to attend with ‘Stop Slavery Today’. Our team met with delegates from around the world – including Australia, New Zealand, Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Pakistan, Curacao, Guyana, Kyrgyzstan, Bermuda, Canada, USA, Trinidad & Tobago, Haiti, France, Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Romania and many law enforcement organisations from the UK. I also took the opportunity to catch up with my ex-boss at South Wales Police – Chief Constable Peter Vaughan and with Kevin Hyland, the recently appointed UK Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner.
